Barend van Herpe en Annemarie van der Heijden maken in de Silver Portrait Store ambachtelijke Wet Plate Collodion Tintype en Black Glass Ambrotype portretten.
Door de 19e-eeuwse processen te vertalen naar de mogelijkheden en wensen van nu, blazen zij de (bijna) verloren kunst van 'wet plate' fotografie nieuw leven in.
Ambachtelijk proces een onvergetelijke ervaring voor jong en oud.
Een tijdloos Silver Portrait vraagt om traditionele vaardigheden in camera-instelling, belichting, sluitertijden en chemie. Voor elke unieke opname maken zij eerst een passende compositie en licht. Hierna prepareren zij een zwart gecoate aluminium- of zwarte glasplaat met een lichtgevoelige laag met zouten en zilver. Deze natte plaat belichten zij in een groot-formaat camera obscura.
Behalve een intrigerend portret dat opgebouwd is uit extreem fijne zilverdeeltjes met een crème witte kleur krijg je bij Silver Portrait Store een bijzondere ervaring. Eigenaren Barend en Annemarie zijn professionals en nemen uitgebreid de tijd. Je maakt het hele proces (van de plaat lichtgevoelig maken tot de ontwikkeling van negatief tot positief) mee in de doka; een ervaring die je niet snel zult vergeten.
Een natte plaat collodion portret is in essentie een uniek (a one-of-a-kind) kunstwerk, een weergave van de werkelijkheid die niet kan worden veranderd of gereproduceerd en die honderden jaren meegaat.

Timeless, magical portraits in the Silver Portrait Store
From the bustling Utrechtsestraat in Amsterdam, you need only take a few steps into Utrechtsedwarsstraat to find our cosy place on the left at nr. 87. It is the store/studio where Barend van Herpe and Annemarie van der Heijden produce beautiful photographic portraits, using the 19th-century wet plate process.
Art and craft, blended into a unique experience for all ages.
To create a true Silver Portrait, lots of traditional photographic skills are needed: camera settings, angles, lighting, timing, styling and, of course, chemicals. Every portrait is a one-off: coated aluminium plates or black glass/clear glass plates are exposed in the large size camera obscura. Through a carefully managed developing process in our dark room, extremely small silver particles reveal your face as you have never seen it before: sharp, full of character and atmosphere. We take all the time to find your optimal position and expression, and you can witness every step of the process, including the developing stage. An experience you will never forget.
Once created the plate is essentially an original physical work of art - a copy of the truth that can’t be changed or reproduced, and it will last for hundreds of years.
